Frequently Asked Questions

Why are you called “Hellgate” Road Runners?

We’re based in Astoria Park, home of the majestic Hell Gate Bridge. Our namesake bridge has been around for over 100 years, and our team just celebrated our 30th year.

Is this a “serious” run club, or more social?

We think of ourselves as being somewhere in the middle: Focused on the workouts, fitness, and building consistency—while also getting to know each other through running camaraderie and social events. For NYRR club points races, we compete in the Open B Division.

I want to check out a workout. Which one should I come to first?

Our Wednesday track session is a great introduction, because the interval format lends itself well to chatting with other folks in between sets. Don’t worry if you’ve never done a track workout before—we have 3 groups according to pace range with timing volunteers who will guide you through the workout.

What paces do you guys run?

The answer depends on who shows up that day. We have runners of all abilities from BQ to run/walk. If you are concerned about finding your pace people, we encourage you to try out Monday hills or Wednesday track sessions. These workouts are lap-based so it’s impossible to be left behind.

It’s raining/freezing/hot/gross outside—is there still a workout?

Yes! Workouts are only canceled in the event of dangerous conditions like lightning, high winds, or ice. It’s great practice to be ready for any weather that might be thrown at you on race day. In case of the potential for more risky conditions, you can check our Instagram stories for any planned workout changes.

Do I have to pay for membership in order to try a workout?

No! Come to a few workouts and see if you like running with us. If it’s a good fit, then go ahead and become a member.

How much does membership cost, and what does it include?

$45/year. This cost goes to Hellgate’s operating costs like insurance and membership in the RRCA (Road Runners Club of America). You also get access to things like timed track sessions, competition in the NYRR Open B division, and any promo events and discount codes we get from select retailers.

I don’t live in Astoria. Can I still run with Hellgate?

Of course! All of our workouts are based in Astoria Park so most of our members tend to live in the neighborhood, but there are no residency requirements.
